Jewish Year
The Jewish calendar
The
Jewish calendar follows the moon, which is to say that there is
"only" 354 days on the Jewish year. This
means that the time moving with respect to the western calendar that is based
on the sun, and therefore has 365 days. It
compensates you for Judaism, by inserting an extra month every two or three
years, so it will always follow the western calendar fairly. That
does ever that the dates move slightly back and forth from year to year. This
is because a Jewish year is lost each year 11 days, but by the insertion of an
"extra" monthly jump 29 or 30 days ahead (one lunar-month consists of
29½ days). In
Hebrew called the years will acquire an extra month for "Shanah
me'uberet" - a pregnant year. The
month is applied is called Adar I Adar Rishon (the first Adar) or Adar Aleph
(Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet). Adar
Rishon is set in before the month Adar, which are currently being called Adar
II, Adar Sheini or Adar Beth.
The
Jewish year consists of 12 months except for "shanot me'uberot",
consisting of an additional month, that is, 13 months.
